Skype to Roll Out Superior iPhone App Very Soon
New Skype app in town
There’s going to be a new Skype app for the iPhone, and it’s going to be superior in quality compared to its predecessor. Previously, the existing Skype for iPhone app allows users to make calls over Wi-Fi but with the new soon-to-be released iPhone app, users can expect top notch voice quality akin to CD quality audio, via its new VOIP solution over 3G networks. This update was posted on Skype’s site on February 3.
The unwelcome guest
However, Apple, or rather, AT&T, is not too keen on the news. Even when Skype released its first Skype for iPhone app in March 2009, Apple was rather lukewarm towards the launch. Sounds familiar? That’s because Apple was also not too happy about the Google Voice which resulted in Apple removing Google Voice-enable apps from the app store, much to the chagrin of users everywhere, as well as to the frustration of bigwigs at Google. Google Voice is threatening AT&T’s livelihood, and the spiteful telco does not want customers enjoying Google Voice’s truckload of benefits.
So is the new and improved Skype for iPhone app going to be the next target?
Not completely rotten
However, most surprisingly for everyone, AT&T decided to allow VOIP iPhone apps AND allow them all to bypass its own voice service! Is that shocking, or what?
Meanwhile, Skype is hard at work implementing changes and greater improvements to the new app before they launch it. Changes include a call quality indicator where users can tell if their location gives the best quality calls. They are set to provide “the very best audio quality we can. When our 3G-capable Skype for iPhone app is released, it’ll let you make calls in wideband audio, giving you greater clarity and fidelity.”
