New Opportunities for Drawing/Painting Apps on Apple’s iPad
The future is now… in the iPad
I remember the time when smartphones were unheard of. During that time, iPhones didn’t exist. We didn’t have apps to play with, and certainly there isn’t an App Store to sell us a cornucopia of applications. Back then, my loyal companion was a Nokia 3315 and I cherished it because of a key feature that allowed me to “draw” pictures, albeit pixelated ones.
Fast forward to 2010. Apple’s 2010 keynote address focused heavily on its latest offering, the iPad. Apple’s SVP of iPhone Software, Scot Forstall have been known to invite developers to show a demo of their latest project but this time he delighted them by giving them a full two weeks to enhance their iPhone apps for the upcoming iPad. One developer who jumped at the chance to do more than just “merely enhance” his app is Steve Sprang, creator of Brushes.
Brushes app – An artist’s best pal
What exactly is Brushes? This iPhone app may not be as viral as iFart, but it sure made an impact with users, especially with both aspiring and established artists. This versatile app inspired artist Jorge Columbo to create a painting on his iPhone. So impressive was his artwork that it was featured on the cover of the New Yorker magazine – June 1, 2009 edition.
Room for improvement
With the iPad, expert artists like David Gribouille from France can expect to enhance their artwork even further. Check out his caricatures done on an iPhone – then imagine what he can do with an iPad! Especially since the built-in replay function will be made available, allowing artists to record and export their painting/drawing activities for future reference and research.
Finger painting, anyone?
PS: Apps to watch out for include Photoshop.com and ArtStudio.
